Comic Relief - March 1997

Over the years, Jo has been no stranger to the local press, especially The Leicester Mercury, who have often featured Jo and her various 'antics', along with her appearances on the local music scene.

The Leicester Mercury
Comic Relief - March 1995

Comic Relief 1995... This was the first episode in Jo's one woman crusade of hair removal in aid of Comic Relief ...And as if once wasn't enough, Jo did it all again for Comic Relief 1997... where The Leicester Mail wrote: "Leicester only female refuse collector binned her barnet for the charity. Jo Martin let Derek Vaz - of Scissorhands Hair Studio, Clarendon Park - loose on her hair, which he shaved and bleached blonde, before stencilling Comic Relief on the back. The event raised about £300."

The Leicester Mercury also followed the story by reporting: "Refuse worker Jo martin (21) has binned her locks for charity. Leicester's only female bin collector subjected her long brown hair to the shaving expertise of hairdresser Derek Vaz... After her hair hit the floor, he bleached her remaining sprigs blonde before stencilling Comic Relief on the back of her head. Jo is pictured taking her first look at her locks with a helping hand from Derek and her mum Bev."

(...even though Jo's head is
quite big enough thank-you!)

Jo even made front cover of a local community based magazine and generally provoked quite alot of attention with her 'comic' hairstyle.

Leicester Mercury Makeover - February 1999

In the early part of 1999, Jo was invited (along with a workmate) to be made over - style wise that is - you know, the typical before and after routine...

The paper thought it was a nice angle to take two people from a 'not so glamourous' career, and make them look like they'd never lifted a wheelie bin in their life. They got to keep the clothes too - which, needless to say, delighted our Jo.

The article said: "Who better to enjoy all the pampering of a full make over than two people whose job allows little time for glamour? But we took them off the bins for a day to give them the fashion works... Jo and Peter were nervous. Very nervous. Their everyday work is probably the exact opposite of glamorous. Overalls, a big lorry and other people's rubbish. They had readily agreed to be our makeover victims for the day. But now it came to the event itself, the two refuse collectors couldn't help but have a few butterflies..."

"...Jo who combines work with playing and teaching drums, is having around three and a half inches cut off her hair. But she's used to a different look. In 1997 she had a crew cut and her hair dyed peroxide blonde in aid of Comic Relief... Jo said: "I have enjoyed every moment of it so far. I wish I could do it more often. I am very happy with my hair, I love it, it's the best it has ever looked..."

"Aye!"
